Two Female Nurses

Registered Nurses (RNs) are responsible for patient care and also serve as educators for their patients, their patients’ families and the general public. Registered Nurses have more education than LPNs and as such have a wider range of positions open to them. RNs will often be in supervisory positions and will perform more complex tasks. These tasks include performing tests, assisting with medical procedures, creating care plans, administering treatments and keeping accurate patient records.

Registered Nurses have a lot of options available to them in terms of the areas they would like to nurse in and they have the opportunity to specialize in a variety of areas. If they have a bachelors degree they also have the option to further their education and pursue a masters or doctoral degree which will often be required if they wish to specialize in a particular area or for to be eligible for research positions.

RNs must pass the appropriate exams and apply for their license with the board in the province or state in which they would like to work before they are able to practice.

The aging populations of Canada and the United States mean that, not only will more people be retiring, but that there will also be more people to care for. Registered Nurses looking for the competitive edge would do well to consider furthering their education, be sure to keep up with technological advancements and consider working in nursing homes, as job opportunities are likely to increase in those types of facilities. Those RN’s with a degree will have more opportunities than those without and RN’s within the advance practice specialities will be even more in demand.
